Days Six and Seven
Day six began with a two hour horseback ride into Galicia. The mountain was steep and rocky. I am not sure I’ve ever been so cold! But, it gave my feet a chance to rest and for that I was grateful.
The villages of this region look like they are from a storybook.
Yesterday held a lot of both ascending and descending. Breathtaking views continued to capture me. But, two experiences stand out:
I saw Jesus yesterday. He was standing by the side of the road in the form of an elderly woman, holding a plate of crepes and carrying bottled water for the pilgrims passing by. Her eyes were pleading, offering her gift. I wish I had stopped! I thanked her, but did not think I needed food at that time and I continued to walk. But, the way she looked will never leave me. It was God’s gracious provision when I didn’t think I needed it. Lesson? Accept what is provided!
The second was a conversation I had with another pilgrim. He seemed to know me although we just met a few days ago on the Camino and had only briefly chatted. He spoke a word over me that penetrated my heart. He said, “You don’t need to suffer anymore.” He continued to encourage me to receive Christ’s love, learn to love myself, and that kindness and goodness were ahead for me on this journey. These were words of life to my heart and deeply significant…
I am resting in Sarria today, taking care of a few things. I head to Portomarin tomorrow. One week down! Two more weeks of potential and possibility ahead…my hands are open.
Words of songs that gripped me yesterday:
“I’ve been carried for a thousand miles…not for a moment will You forsake me”
“Where your river flows everything lives”
“He still brings water from a rock”
Keep the prayers coming! I’m living off of them!
